The "Spartan Pizza Warrior" Greg Oliva takes first place at Merrill Creek, winning back to back tournaments to add to his winner titles, collected already making it three for the year. Greg, please leave some for us, lol. He is unstoppable in his quest to become AOY for 08. With three tournaments left, it would be very difficult to catch up to Greg and try to capture the title of “Angler of the year.”
Weather for Oscawanna lake called for sun and clouds, winds around five miles per hour with little to no chance of rain for tournament day. Starting time was a little delayed, but did not affect the overall results, adding a half hour to the finishing time allowed for eight hours of fishing. Greg's was fortunate enough to be able to pre-fish for Oscawanna and having good success was maybe the key reason for his win. Getting up there was easy, but as for getting back home that day, it took, I believe it was a little over four hours of driving time that paid off in the end. The winning purse will never catch up to our expenses for a day of pre-fishing or the tournament expense. Greg. I feel your pain.
Greg's previous win for 08 was on Oscawanna weighing in at 15.86lbs; Greg's game plan for the day was to concentrate his pitching technique style of fishing. Pitching a six inch straight tail worm into the weeds for suspended bass in five feet of water is Greg's forte. Greg began to catch all of his fish with the six inch worm, but later opted to change to a big 10 inch red shad power worm and culled all of his small fish with the bigger bait. His tackle used for the day was a baitcaster with 12lb test, 1/8 ounce tungsten weight on a 6 1/2 medium-heavy action rod. Great job Greg from all of us, and we all wish you again much more success in the future. Second place went to P.J. Bartolotto with 10.37 lbs and third place went to Scott Rieger. with 10.18lbs of fish. Lunker was also collected by Greg with a 4.11lb largemouth bass.
The weather report for Merrill Creek called for clouds and sun with a higher percentage of rain and it was true to every word. We also started late due to the gate keeper wasn't there until sun up. Greg's weight for Merrill creek was impressive again with five fish, 16.47lbs, he also had lunker with a 3.85lb small mouth. Greg's tackle for the day was 7' foot Fenwick medium rod; 6lb test flora Carbon line, on a spinning reel. He kept his boat in 45 to 50 feet of water casting out into 45ft using a technique unfamiliar to east coast bass angler, "The Jackle Flick shake Technique.” see video on home page! This would be keeping and tight line and pendulum the lure towards you while shaking it during the whole time while it is falling down. Greg has a knack for trying new technique keeping him on top of his game. Wacky worming just got its name changed, lol. Second place went Andre L with 10.67lbs, and third place was Elliott L. with 10.49lbs.
Our next stop on the trail coming up in September will be on Lake George, NY in Silver bay. Saturday night, we will have our annual spaghetti dinner. Some will be leaving early to pre- fish and others like me will be heading up the Friday night before the tournament going into the tournament blind hoping for the best. With three tournaments left, this season is coming to a close before you know it. At our last meeting, our 2009 tournament schedule was discussed and voted on by all the members that attended. I'm very excited to mention next year will take Raritan Valley Bassmasters too new bodies of water for making it a new and exploring year to look forward for. Lets hope for the gas to come down!
