"2008 Annual Kids Fishing Derby"
On Saturday April 26th, The Greenbrook Police Department, with assistance from the Raritan Valley Bassmasters fishing club, held it's "2008 Kids Fishing Derby". The derby, an annual event, was held at the pond behind the Greenbrook Municipal Building and it's purpose is to is to help introduce kids,of all ages to the wonderful world of fishing. This year, solely for the event, the pond was stocked a few days before with 400 trout in an effort to make the days catch much more fruitful for the kids. By days end, there were probably 80 to 100 kids wetting lines. During the event, the kids caught several different species of fish with trout being the most common. The kids also caught sunfish, catfish and even a largemouth bass made an appearance.
The Raritan Valley Bassmasters, a part of the N.J. Bass Federation, participated in the event by supplying food and drinks for the kids. Club members supplied and worked the BBQ grills, walked the shore line assisting kids with rigging, casting and answering general fishing type questions and many a hook removal issue. Several club members did have there boats on display for the kids and parents to view and fielded many questions on boating in regards to both fishing and recreational types.
Making an appearance at the event was Pete Semenick, Jr. Pete is from the public access (cable television) show "Jersey Fishin'". He spent much of the day chatting with the kids, their parents and taking a lot of film footage (hopefully for an upcoming show).
At events end, all participants were given t-shirts commemorating the event, along with fishing paraphernalia donated by local Sporting Goods retailers. The weather held out, the fishing were biting and a pleasant time seemed to be had by all.
